E*TRADE backtesting alternative that tests ideas on 20+ years

E*TRADE is a broker with strong active-trader tooling, but it does not backtest a stock strategy on decades of history. Agenttrading vets the idea first, then you place the trade wherever you like.

Credit where due - what E*TRADE does well

  • Commission-free stock and ETF trading inside a full-featured Morgan Stanley brokerage
  • Power E*TRADE active-trader platform with 145+ chart studies, live scans, and a paper-trading simulator
  • Strong options analytics, including an Options Income Backtester and Snapshot Analysis

The honest comparison

E*TRADE, now part of Morgan Stanley, is a genuinely good broker, and the Power E*TRADE platform earns its reputation with active traders. Stock and ETF trades are commission-free, the platform is free to use, and the active-trader toolkit is deep: 145+ chart studies, automatic pattern recognition, live scans, an Earnings Move Analyzer, Snapshot Analysis for options risk and reward, and a paper-trading simulator loaded with virtual money. If your job is to place trades and manage positions, E*TRADE does that job well and you should keep the account. The boundary is what "testing" means. E*TRADE has no general historical backtester for stock strategies. Its only backtesting tool is the Options Income Backtester, which compares income-focused options strategies against holding the stock, and its paper trading tests a strategy forward in a simulator from today, not backward across decades of real history. So the question "did this rule actually work over the last 20 years, after costs" is one the platform cannot answer. Agenttrading answers exactly that question, and it is not a broker. Type the thesis in plain English, such as "hold SPY above its 200-day moving average", and it restates the rule, backtests it on 20+ years of split- and dividend-adjusted daily data with a 0.1% cost per trade assumed by default, explains the risks in words, and stamps an honest verdict: HELD UP, MIXED, or UNDERPERFORMED, even when the idea loses to buy-and-hold. Nothing here executes a trade or connects to a brokerage, which is the point: the two tools sit at different stations. You vet the idea on Agenttrading from $19 per month, then place the trade at E*TRADE or wherever you already trade. It is educational analysis only, never advice: the bench shows what history says, and the trading decision stays yours.

On the same bench

The one-pass workflow is laid out on backtesting software, and the trading strategy tester shows how a plain sentence becomes the rule card the test runs on. Because E*TRADE's real testing strength is options, the options backtesting page draws that line honestly, and does E*TRADE have backtesting walks through each of its tools. Plans start at $19 per month.

QUESTIONS - ASKED AND ANSWERED

E*TRADE alternatives: the common questions

Does E*TRADE have backtesting?

Only in a limited form. E*TRADE has an Options Income Backtester that compares income-focused options strategies against holding the stock, and Power E*TRADE includes paper trading that simulates a strategy forward from today. It has no general historical backtester that runs a stock rule across decades of past data, so it cannot tell you whether a stock strategy worked over the last 20 years.

Can you backtest a stock strategy on E*TRADE?

Not against historical data. Power E*TRADE lets you paper trade a strategy going forward in a simulator, which tests your discipline in real time but reveals nothing about how the rule behaved through 2008 or 2020. To test a stock rule backward on 20+ years of adjusted history with costs included, you need a dedicated backtesting bench, then you can place the resulting trades at E*TRADE.

Is Power E*TRADE free?

Yes. Power E*TRADE is free to use with an E*TRADE brokerage account, and stock and ETF trades are commission-free. Options carry a standard per-contract fee. The platform being free is not the same as having a backtester: the active-trader tools are strong, but historical stock-strategy backtesting is not among them.

E*TRADE vs Agenttrading: what is the difference?

E*TRADE is a broker that executes your trades and gives you charts, scans, and paper trading to plan them. Agenttrading is a research bench that executes nothing; it takes one thesis in plain English, backtests it on 20+ years of adjusted data, prints every assumption, and stamps an honest verdict including UNDERPERFORMED. You vet the idea on one and place the trade on the other.

What is the best way to test a strategy before trading it on E*TRADE?

Test it backward first, then forward. Run the rule on 20+ years of split- and dividend-adjusted history with realistic costs to learn whether the edge ever existed and what its worst drawdown looked like; if it survives, paper trade it in Power E*TRADE to rehearse execution; only then commit capital. Skipping the historical step is how a rule that never worked reaches your account.
