QuantConnect is worth paying for if you write trading strategies in Python or C# and want to backtest them on institutional-grade data and then run them live at a broker from the same code. It is the wrong tool if you do not code. The free plan backtests without limit but cannot trade live, the $84 Researcher plan is the real entry price for live trading, and a two-person team pays at least $336 a month. Most solo traders should start on Researcher, billed monthly, and stay there until they hit a node limit.

We rendered QuantConnect's pricing page and full feature comparison table in a real browser on October 15, 2026, and read its terms of use the same day. Prices and quotes below come from those pages unless we say the arithmetic is ours. The line-item catalog behind the plans was read on September 21, 2026, for our QuantConnect pricing breakdown, and the plan totals it adds up to were unchanged on October 15.

The cheapest-invoice column is our arithmetic: the card price times the minimum user count that QuantConnect prints under each card. Annual billing saves $288 a user a year on Team, $768 on Trading Firm and $2,352 on Institution, in QuantConnect's own words "Save $288 per user with annual billing".

How much does QuantConnect cost?

QuantConnect costs $0 on the Free plan, $84 a month on Researcher, $168 per user a month on Team, $480 per user a month on Trading Firm and $1,272 per user a month on Institution. Team and Trading Firm require at least two users and Institution at least five, so the smallest paid team invoice is $336 a month. Data add-ons and extra compute are priced on top.

The $84 is not a flat subscription. QuantConnect sells seats and compute nodes as separate line items, and the Researcher card is their exact sum: a $10 seat, a $14 B2-8 backtesting node, a $12 R1-4 research node, a $24 L-MICRO live trading node and a $24 A1-1 assistant node. That matters in practice. If you only backtest and never trade live, you are paying for a live node you do not use, and if you need a faster backtester the bill rises by the price of the node, not by a plan step.

Is QuantConnect free?

The research half is. The free plan includes "Unlimited Backtesting" on equities, indexes, forex, crypto, futures and options data at minute, hour and daily resolution, with one backtesting node and one research node. The trading half is not. In the comparison table the free plan's Live Trading Node Limit is 0, paper trading is not included, and every brokerage row, from Interactive Brokers to Alpaca, is a dash. Local coding through the LEAN CLI, tick and second data, and API access also start at Researcher. The free plan is a long, honest trial for someone learning to code strategies. It is not a way to run one.

This is QuantConnect's comparison table as rendered on October 15, 2026. Two rows deserve attention before you buy. The 64KB file limit on Researcher is per file, so a large strategy has to be split across files, which is good practice anyway. And notifications beyond the hourly rate are billed in QCC, QuantConnect's credit currency, as are SMS alerts at 1 QCC each in the US and Canada.

Who QuantConnect is for

QuantConnect is a cloud platform built on LEAN, its open-source algorithmic trading engine. You write strategies in Python or C#, in the browser or in your own editor, and the same code runs a backtest and then a live algorithm. The broker list on the pricing page is long: Interactive Brokers, tastytrade, Charles Schwab, TradeStation, Alpaca, Tradier and several crypto exchanges on every paid plan, with FIX and prime brokers on Trading Firm and above. Few platforms let one script go from a twenty-year backtest to a live account at Schwab or Interactive Brokers without being rewritten.

It suits three kinds of buyer well: a developer who trades systematically and wants deep historical data without building a pipeline, a small quant team that needs shared projects and permissions, and a researcher who mostly backtests and is happy on the free plan for months. It suits a discretionary trader poorly, because nothing in QuantConnect works until you have written code.

QuantConnect pros and cons

StrengthsWeaknesses
Unlimited backtesting on the free plan across six asset classesRequires Python or C#; there is no rule builder
One codebase for backtest, paper and live tradingFree plan cannot paper trade or trade live
Open-source engine you can run on your own hardwarePricing is a stack of seats, nodes and credits, not one number
Broad broker list, including Schwab and Interactive BrokersTeam plans carry a two-user minimum, so a team of one cannot buy Team
Scales from one researcher to an institution on the same platformAlternative data is an add-on, and so is the futures live feed on Researcher

Is QuantConnect worth it?

For a coder who will trade what they test, yes. $84 a month covers backtesting, research and two live nodes, and the free plan lets you prove the strategy before you pay anything. It is worth less if you will never go live, because the Researcher bundle includes a live node and an assistant node you would not use, and worth nothing if you do not code. Before you size a team plan, check the minimums: two analysts on Team cost $4,032 a year before annual savings, by our arithmetic.

Running live also turns a research question into an operations one. A notification on QuantConnect is something your algorithm sends, so an algorithm that has stopped sends nothing. If your setup also relies on a webhook or a self-hosted bridge, put an independent uptime check on that endpoint so a silent failure is caught by something outside the code that failed.

QuantConnect alternatives

If you want strategy search rather than hand-written code, StrategyQuant X generates and stress-tests strategies for forex and futures and exports code to other platforms, from $1,290 once, as priced on StrategyQuant pricing. If you want to write your own rules on a Windows desktop with a GUI, WealthLab pricing starts at $399.95 a year. If you want automation without code, our guide to algorithmic trading software without coding compares the tools that build rules visually, and automated trading platforms covers the ones that place orders.

If what you want is the answer to whether a rule has worked on a stock or ETF, not a platform to engineer it, the shortest route is our trading strategy tester. Type the rule in plain English, and it runs on split- and dividend-adjusted daily data with costs on every trade, then returns the trade list and a plain verdict against buy and hold. Starter is $288 a year, and the full comparison with QuantConnect is on QuantConnect alternative. Our limits are real: US stocks and ETFs, daily bars, no live trading and no code export. A developer who intends to trade the strategy automatically should use QuantConnect, and may use both, one to check the idea in a minute and the other to build it.

QuantConnect review verdict

QuestionShort answer
Best plan for a solo coderResearcher at $84 a month
Can the free plan trade liveNo, its live trading node limit is 0
Cheapest plan for two peopleTeam at $336 a month, two-user minimum

Main thing to check yourselfWhether you need the live and assistant nodes bundled into Researcher
Who should not buy itAnyone who does not want to write code

QuantConnect is the strongest choice we know of for a trader who codes and wants one script to run from backtest to live account. Use the free plan until your strategy is worth trading, buy Researcher when you need a live node, and price team plans at their minimum seat count rather than the per-user card. If you are still at the idea stage and not writing code, test the rule first in the trading strategy tester.
